Like many people, I could not give a rats ass about the current popular FPS shooters that populate gaming today; the most obvious example being Call of Duty. On first inspection, Spec Ops: The Line looks like a pretty generic rip off of said series, and the first hour or so more or less plays like one. But does it stay like that?

...Oh. Oh god. It most certainly doesn't.

This is pretty much the Shadow of the Colossus of the Modern Shooter games. Whilst Colossus made us question ourselves for mindlessly slaughtering what were innocent Bosses for enjoyment, Spec Ops savagely attacks the player for using shooters as an unrealistic, morally ambiguous escapist fantasy.

The three generic (at first) soldiers are torn apart, burnt and bloodied by the end, and the main character at the end of the game is arguebly worse than the villains because of all the deaths he's caused. By the end of the game, it practically compels you to put down your weapon and stop the bloodshed.

I'm hoping to do a small personal Top Five Games of 2012, and you can garun-DAMN-tee that this masterpiece is one that list!
