Matt's Letterboxd Film Thoughts: September
Hey everyone. It's been a while, huh? I've said this before but it's been a busy time in my life, largely with some exams and such for work related stuff. There were periods where I just didn't have much time to come on and chat, sadly.
One thing I have been doing though is quickly writing my thoughts on any films I've recently seen on Letterboxd. It's a site I've come to really love, and I'm slowly building an audience. 'Slowly' being the keyword, sitting currently at about 36. I have plans for when I reach a hundred of course but that'll be a while I think. Still, it's a really cool site and I recommend checking it out.
But...not all of y

Mission: Impossible Ranked
Hey everyone. Been a while, huh? It's been tough lately for me. I've had my aforementioned severe writers block, I was initially close to leaving this after having to deal with Star Wars Fanboy dickheads - one of whom I once thought of as a good friend - who want to ruin the franchise, but most recently for me has been some pretty heavy revisions for an upcoming exam. Quite busy, quite hectic.
Today however I took a day off and went to see Mission: Impossible - Fallout, and the film inspired me to go over my thoughts on every film and afterwards rank them. I've already done this on my Letterboxd account - linked below - and now I will share

50) Power Rangers
Sooooo....some of you might recall that I have in the past ragged on this film.
I hated the first trailer because it seemed like it totally misunderstood what I and many people loved about Power Rangers. Power Rangers was also an unabashedly cheesy series and that's what I loved about it thank you very much, so seeing someone make a film about it only making 'darker' and 'edgier' seemed like such a stupid yet very typical move on the creators part. Even when later trailers tried to sell it as being more light-hearted I wasn't convinced that the film was going to be a faithful adaptation of what the original show was like,

60) First They Killed My Father
I have my gripes with Netflix and their growing 'quantity over quality' mentality that's starting to make them look like the cinematic equivalent of Steam, but I won't deny for a second that they've realised not only great films but also certain films that would struggle at the cinema. A film about the genocides committed by the Khmer Rouge isn't gonna sell many tickets, but on Netflix it has a platform to well and truly shine in the spotlight with viewers sitting at home, perhaps more inclined to check such a film out.
Based on the same named autobiography and set amid the sudden rise and terrifying reign of

70) Gerald's Game
The next Stephen King adaptation on this list, Gerald's Game isn't as well known as some of King's more famous novels. Taking place almost entirely in a couples bedroom, the film stars Carla Gugino as Jessie, who in a sex game with her husband is handcuffed to a bed and cannot escape on her own. Her husband proceeds to have a heart attack and die, leaving Jessie trapped to the bed with no one except a dog eating her husbands corpse, projections of herself and husband created by her decaying sanity, and a maybe/maybe not projection of a disfigured grave-robber visiting her in the night.
Y'know, just another lazy weekend.

80) The Greatest Showman
Does this film portray a VERY inaccurate and untruthful account of what P.T. Barnum?
Yep.
Does it therefore completely side-step any difficult questions about the exploitation of disabled people and social outcasts?
Yep.
And is the film's flimsy plot basically there just to string together the film's many songs and lacks any solid structure or pacing?
Yep.
.........Are said songs good though?
......Yep.
Look guys, I fully agree with people who are really bothered by this film and I do not

90) The Inhumans (Episodes 1 & 2)
Yes, this is on here. For those unaware the first two episodes of the shitty Inhumans show were packaged together into a 'film' and got a theatrical release in IMAX. For me that means it counts, especially since I had to pay extra money for this crap because they would only show it in IMAX.
And yea, what I said in my disappointment list pretty much applies here as well. The show was terrible and the opening two episodes/film are certainly no better on their own. It's a confused, stale adaptation of what at least a very bizarre series about equally bizarre characters. I'll give the creators credit for at lea

In 2016 I saw at most around thirty new films. In 2017 I saw exactly one hundred.
There's two reasons for that. First, I bought a membership card at my local cinema that allowed me to see as many films as I wanted for a monthly price. That, along with my new Netflix account has given me the opportunity to see many more films than ever before, but what really helped me was the fact that I also moved house! I now live locally to at least two cinemas and can go either after work or during the weekend at my leisure.
Because of that I've not only see tons of films but I've seen several films twice - a couple THREE times - and it's exposed me to

Nukid101's Top 10 Disappointments Of 2017
Well folks 2017. Jesus fucking Christ.
This year has not been pleasant for many of us. We're more divided than ever, more scared for our future and it's been a year of many upsetting tragedies and huge upheavals in the status quo. Positive things have stemmed from the latter, such as the growing war against sexual harassment in all circles of life, but it's also lead to a worrying normalisation of fascist fringes and a growing tolerance towards racism.
No one could've expected a US President defending Nazi's a year ago, but that's where we are in life right now.
For me personally however, I must admit that 2017 has been an improvement over

Hey everyone. Here's last week's reviews. Enjoy!
The Florida Project
Set in Kissimmee, Florida during the summer, the story follows six year old Moonee and her young mother Halley as they live with a community of extended-stay motel guests, ran by manager Bobby Hicks (Willem Dafoe).
The Florida Project was created by Sean Baker, who in 2015 wowed people with the excellent Tangerine, a film that was done entirely on IPhone and was about a Transgender sex worker. It wowed people across the world for what was a frank and realistic depiction of the live of Transgender person but also for its humanity and compassion, even in its darker moments.
