Welcome everyone to Part Two of my first Top Ten List, my Top Ten Favourite Steve Blum Voice Roles. We've already gotten through 10 to 6, and now we're down to the final five.

My choosing for these five was partly due to the quality of every role, but mostly down to the fact that these are the five characters I love to hear Steve Blum play over and over again. In fact, especially in one case, it's his performance as these five characters that makes me always listen to these anime/games in English. With that said and done, let's dig in to my Top Five Favourite Steve Blum Voice Roles!

Top Ten Favourite Steve Blum Voice Roles Part 2

Number 5…

Guilmon from Digimon Tamers…

Steve Blum can do many kinds of voices, but if I hadn't already seen Digimon Tamers, I would never believe he could sound absolutely adorable.

By far his most unique and I daresay hardest voice to do, his performance as Guilmon is nothing short of perfect. It perfectly captures the innocence and child-like nature of Guilmon without making him sound annoying (in my opinion in that regard).

I can't help but imagine how hard this must've been for Steve to do the entire season. I mean, just imagine this for a moment: Imagine voicing all of a major character's lines for an entire series whilst impersonating Donald Duck. I daresay this must've been a challenge for him to voice.

But did Steve Blum buckle? Hell no, his acting was constantly consistent, and constantly awesome all through the anime. Even if the dub did change things in the story (something I usually get annoyed at…fuck you Robotech), I would watch Digimon Tamers for Steve Blum's performance as Guilmon alone.

Number 4…

Mugen from Samurai Champloo…

Once again Steve Blum plays a heroic sociopath. But unlike Jack Cayman who was growling, old and somewhat reserved, Mugen is loud, hot-blooded and uses every chance he can to swear.

Considered to be the male equivalent of Revy from Black Lagoon, Mugen is the kind of anti hero you can't help but love: he won't intentionally seek out hurting innocent people and does care for his friends, but is also amoral and openly loves fighting and killing. Sounds perfect for Steve Blum!

Suffice to say, Steve Blum manages to capture his loud an obnoxious behaviour to a T, and adds in tons of swear words without feeling like he's overdoing it. Not to mention that when Mugen was acting hilarious-which he did on many occasions-Steve's acting never faltered and was still incredible.

Being the spiritual successor to my Number 3 choice however meant there was a ton of emotional back story to his character, and just like my next choice, Steve Blum perfectly acts these scenes without ever feeling forced. What can I say other than Mugen is Steve Blum's ultimate sociopath!

Number 3…

Spike Spiegel from Cowboy Bebop…

Considering its part of the first dub to ever outshine the original Japanese version, his performance as Spike Spiegel HAS to be on here.

Spike was originally voiced by Koichi Yamadera, a well-respected voice actor in Japan and was praised for his role as Spike. Regardless however, the Cowboy Bebop creator himself, Shinichiro Watanabe, said that he and the rest of the Cowboy Bebop English cast did BETTER than him, which at that time, was like saying the impossible.

If you've seen Cowboy Bebop, then you know that this is a very subtle, often indirect series. Sure it has action and stuff, but the series is probably equally known for how much of a character study it is. Often the most profound things were the things not outright stated.

Suffice to say, our main character Spike could NOT suffer from overacting or else ruin the show, and while he does of course shout, Steve Blum did a perfect job when acting his many quiet, contemplative scenes. Every line uttered in Cowboy Bebop is perfect, from him screaming at Faye, to his slow whispers to Julia.

It was no doubt a hard role to do, considering how little we know of the character, but I think it was thanks to Blum's performance that all the subtle hints Spike gave us were perfectly translated to English. It's Steve Blum's most famous role and deserving of its number 3 spot!

……Bang.

Number 2…

Onizuka from Great Teacher Onizuka…

The Great Teacher Onizuka dub is hard to talk about. On the one hand, most of the voices are pretty mediocre and some are downright horrible.

On the other hand, Steve Blum as Onizuka is one of the great castings of all time.

There is only one way to describe this and my number 1 favourite. FUN. I love listening to Blum as Onizuka, he is so bloody hilarious! He never failed to make me laugh and was by far the shows greatest source of comedy!

Of course, humour wasn't the only thing he had to offer. Onizuka is also incredibly badass and inspirational to his students, and wouldn't you know it, Onizuka is awesome in those scenes as well. While the voice actors around him were debatable in quality, Steve Blum's performance as Onizuka never faltered for a second.

Frankly, it was his performance as Onizuka that pretty much SAVED this dub. That's how awesome he is!

Number 1…

Oghren from Dragon Age: Origins…

That's right, my favourite Steve Blum voice role isn't him as a kickass bounty hunter or an inspirational teacher…it's as a drunk, perverted Dwarf.

Now, anyone who knows me well knows that I fucking love the Dragon Age game series to bits. Hell, I even love Dragon Age 2 (though I admit it's not as good as Origins). I'm a sucker for adult fantasy, and the franchise is in many ways a giant tribute to the genre.

While the Elves in Dragon Age are radically different from what we usually see in fantasy (instead of being a superior race, they're second class citizens instead), the Dwarves are played very straight and loyal. As such, Oghren will at first come off as a very typical Dwarf and comes off as just a drunk.

And thanks to Steve Blum, this cliché is incredibly awesome and incredibly hilarious.

Just listening to Oghren, you just KNOW Steve had a hell of a time saying his lines! They're said with such passion! He didn't do much with his voice like others, but since Oghren was often drunk, he would often give him a slight slur, a few weird bodily noises, little things that made you forget that you knew whose voice it was. To put it simply, you didn't think it was Steve Blum's voice you were listening to, it was Oghren's voice!

Of course, this being Dragon Age, he's a lot deeper than just being the drunken dwarf. He has a fair share of sombre moments due to both his wife going insane, and the fact that…well, he's very aware that he's a washed up drunk, and when he admits all this, Steve took them very seriously, and you would have a heart of stone to not feel sorry for him.

I'm not saying Oghren is his BEST role, but he is the role I personally love to him voice over and over again. He's funny, sombre and badass, all of which Steve Blum can perform flawlessly!

Well, there you have it folks! Hope you enjoyed my first Top Ten list! Stay tuned for my first Comparison: Naruto Vs One Piece!
Enjoy

I liked him in the Ratchet and Clank games where he voiced one of my favorite bosses The Thugs-4-less Leader in Going Commando.
