Hey everyone. Well looks like we’re back again for more Star Wars Rebels. Let’s kick it off with this review!

Ezra's Test

Truthfully this review isn’t gonna be very long because not a lot of various things happened. The big part of this whole episode was the Jedi trial Ezra had to go through for his next step to becoming a Jedi. On a side not I also liked that what Ezra did last episode also had an influence on Kanan deciding to do this, because after last episode he should be rightfully afraid. I’m not Star Wars expert but even I know that something like what happened last episode is pretty alarming.

I daresay this was intentional but I did get reminded of the test Luke had to go through in Empire Strikes Back. This was an emotional journey where Ezra had to see some of his biggest fears and understands why he fights, and overall I think it’s done pretty well. Using the Inquisitor was the perfect choice since he’s clearly an image of fear for Ezra, and the scenes of him killing Kanan and the rest of the Ghost crew are clearly haunting to Ezra (really liked how they shot him killing the crew. That was genuinely quite haunting).

Of course we also saw before their deaths what they thought of Ezra, or rather what Ezra is afraid what they secretly think of him. It all comes together really well at the end when Yoda  - I’ll get to him later – asks him why he fights. He initially think it’s for the power to get revenge on the Empire, but realises it’s more to protect his friends and help others. A little corny? Perhaps, but considering Ezra’s outlook at the start of the show it does resonate more than other uses of this little cliché.

All in all pretty good. I’ve seen better depictions of such inner journey’s, but for something to squeeze into 20 minutes it did its job really well.

Kanan’s Part

As much as this was for Ezra, going through the test was definitely important for Kanan too. Kanan’s insecurities as a teacher has been explored before but here he seemed most afraid of the possibility of being a failure. It is quite humanising seeing how he takes all of Ezra’s issues with training as failures of his own. It’s certainly made for a very dynamic teacher/student relationship.

If anything it does show how much he does trust Ezra to put his life in Ezra’s hands like this. Besides that I also liked the mention of how Kanan did once lose his way during on the Jedi path after Order 66. I believe there’s a prequel novel to this series where Kanan is a bit more anti-heroish, so it’s a potentially cool reference to that.

Honestly at the moment I’d say Kanan is the shows strongest character, which is actually quite impressive considering how good the shows cast is so far.

The Temple Being On Lothal...

...Okay, that was a bit of contrived luck on their part, but I’ll give the show credit for highlighting that fact.

Yoda

Truthfully I knew before watching this episode that Yoda would appear and I initially iffy on that. It seemed too early again for such a big character appearing, but honestly I quite liked how he was used. He didn’t physically appear but connected to them through the force, and I can’t deny that he was the perfect character to help Ezra in such a moment.

It did also make me appreciate the idea that Yoda was still helping the rebellion in his own small ways before Luke came to him. He is Yoda after all; it’s believable that he wouldn’t just sit idly by while the Empire reigned in terror.

Ezra’s Lightsaber

In many ways Ezra finally getting a Lightsaber feels like the end of the shows first chapter and the start of the new one, which makes this being the first new episode quite significant. It’s a new step in his training and will in many ways change much of how the show goes. I imagine the show will develop his skills over time, starting out as quite clumsy but getting better with each new fight, much like how his other training has gone.

The actual Lightsaber itself is pretty cool. It looks less refined than normal Lightsabers and cobbled together – which it was from various spare parts – but in a way that’s all fitting; it’s a Lightsaber made by someone on the more impoverished Rebel side. The design itself is pretty damn unique but not jarringly so, so all in all I like it.

The best part though? We may be finally free of that bloody slingshot. Hallelujah.

Overall

Overall this was a damn fine start to the series return. They showed us that the show did not lose any steam with its skip as this is a fine continuation from the previous episode and it progresses the story in small but significant ways. I’m more excited than ever for what the show has to offer. Till next episode folks!

While I quickly figured the Inquisitor was fake, for a moment I thought he was real when he reappeared when Ezra thought he was back in reality, until he said Kanan was dead. Aside from that, I have nothing to add that you didn't already say.
